John Williams

Yesterday night was a wonderful performance at the DSO featuring John Williams (the composer) conducting his own works. I have enjoyed his compositions over the years, in particular Liberty Fanfare, The Five Sacred Trees (in particular Tortan movement), and the theme from Seven Years in Tibet, but the most treasured to me is his score for Jurassic Park. I enjoy the composition so much after hearing them that, a few years later, I played a piano version of the Theme From Jurassic Park for my piano recital and again earning awards during the American Guide of Music competitions. I particularly enjoy flow around measures 20 to 30 of the theme itself. My Friend, The Brachiosaurus, and Remembering Petticoat Lane are other favorite parts of that score. I remain hopeful that someday I will have the opportunity to meet Mr. Williams in person but until I feel like I got to understand the composer more as he spoke from the stage. He shared a number of great stories about his work in the movies on Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Schindler's List. He also demonstrated a section of movie film first without music then again with the DSO playing along in sync. I was quite impressive. In addition to the music on the program he played 3 encore programs. First was a bit of music from the Olympics. Second, was the theme from Memoirs of a Geisha. Third, was the theme from Raider of the Lost Arc. I think we can all thank Mr. Williams for stopping by Detroit and for the lifetime of wonderful music to listen to and play.
